What To Do About Money Corrupting Elections

Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:26

Since the Citizens United ruling in January, 2010, "independent expenditures" have flooded into political campaigns from Super PACs.  These uper PACs finance TV and radio attack ads that are generally negative, very often misleading, and frequently outright lies. And by the way, “independent expenditures” is a complete misnomer. I leave it to you to decide whether the supreme court majority was complicit in the political corruption or merely stupid to think that political donors would spend tens to hundreds of millions of dollars and not figure out how to coordinate it with the campaigns.

Florida Initiative for Electoral Reform (FLIER) has provided sample emails to use for contacting your Florida Representative and Senator this week to support legislation which would reverse the several voter suppression bills that have already been passed into law.  Please act this week. For more about the good work done at FLIER, visit

Deja vu all over again

Tuesday, 21 February 2012 21:03

The Supreme Court has done it again, sticking it to Montanans last week like it did to the Arizonans in 2010.  SCOTUS stayed implementation of a 100 year old Montana law that prohibited corporations from spending money on political campaigns. 100 years. A century of Montana state legal precedent thrown out by the SCOTANS because … apparently they like how the political system has flourished under Citizens United and the resulting flood of corporate campaign spending.

Miami, FL— Today, the Florida Times-Union recommended that “voters should support the reasonable Amendments 5 and 6,” making it a clean sweep of endorsements from major newspapers across the state. A total of 22 newspapers have urged Floridians to vote YES on FairDistricts Amendments 5 and 6.

For those who missed the Move To Amend event at the Univitarian Universalist Church of Brevard on September 16th can now hear the talk by David Cobb in an audio recording provided by the church. The recording includes introductory comments by Reverend Gregory Wilson, a short talk by Fred Markham on public campaign financing, and a very interesting and entertaining talk by David Cobb, progressive activist and former Green Party presidential candidate.
