BIAS TOWARDS CHARTER SCHOOLS

Florida Today Opinion, July 31, 2011

Of the seven Space Coast charter schools graded on FCAT standards this year, five earned lower marks than last year, one earned Brevard School districts only F grade this year. Yet, the Florida legislature continues to take funds from public schools to help fund charter schools.

CHARTER SCHOOLS AREN'T MEASURING UP

Fred Grimm, columnist, Miami Herald, July 27, 2011

The governor and the Legislature have invested their rhetoric and your money in the notion that charter schools will improve student achievement. Except the results haven’t been so grand. Less than 12 percent of the state’s schools are charters, but they account for 15 of Florida’s 31 failing schools.... Charter schools may operate unburdened by bureaucratic hierarchy, but when they take on troublesome demographics, they fare no better than regular schools.
