Energy, Earthquakes, and Democracy

Written by

Jay Mandle's April Money on My Mind column, "Energy, Earthquakes, and Democracy," puts the current events of Japan's nuclear disaster, the Arab push for democracy, and U.S. energy policy into perspective.

It demonstrates the powerful connection between private money financing our elections and the dominance of fossil fuels over U.S. tax expenditures for energy research. If anything, Mandle's figures understate the problem: we need only recall Dick Cheney's 2001 secret policy meetings with energy industry leaders to understand the amplifying effect of powerful government officials on the private contributions of special interests.
