SCPA Coronavirus Letter To Members

Written by  Raed Alshaibi

Dear Fellow SCPA Members,

Together, we are facing a truly unprecedented situation. The global coronavirus pandemic is affecting all of our families, our communities, and our way of life. During this time, your SCPA Board wants to update you on what we can do to help our community as we continue dealing with this situation.

First and foremost, our hearts go out to anyone who's been seriously impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. Our thoughts are especially with those who are sick, to whom we extend our heartfelt wishes for a full recovery. And we're truly inspired by the selfless healthcare workers around the world who are on the front lines working tirelessly to care for people in need.

During this time, the SCPA is open to supporting any nonprofit organization in any positive efforts across Brevard County to help our local communities where we live, work and enjoy our tranquil beaches.

To help you see and understand coronavirus data in near real-time, we recommend the Johns Hopkins Medical Center’s site here: or you can use this private analytical site:, that uses case data compiled by Johns Hopkins, as well as data from the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For Florida-specific data, check here: Florida COVID-19.

We urge our members to:

  • Participate in public decision-making. If you want to make a difference in our community, demand a seat at the table as our local governments are putting together response task forces. Insist that you and your partners are at the podium so you can be part of the “information movement” of gathering and sharing information.
  • Be a voice for civility and healing. Speak out against acts of discrimination and xenophobia you see in response to this spreading disease. Please help our communities by helping to counter discrimination. King County, Washington shares a number of ideas here: anti-stigma resources.
  • Take care of yourselves. As we all practice social distancing to protect our physical health, we also need to protect our mental health. The social aspects of our lives, from the little pleasures of dining out, going to concerts and movies, to the simple opportunities to “chat around the water cooler,” have been upended. So, it’s important to practice self-care during this time. Encourage everyone to hold virtual meetings by video conference, rather than just by phone. Getting to see other faces is just a small gesture, but it’s useful.

If any of our members -- especially our seniors -- are in need of any assistance. Please reach out. We are here to support you in any way possible. Our point of contact is Raed Alshaibi, Vice President, SCPA. He can be reached at 321-961-5234 or email at: This email address is being protected from spambots. As we go forward together, we’ll be sure to keep you updated, and it’s important that you know that we always value your membership, ideas and feedback.
